Star Wars and Food Porn

I baked my first apple pie! Okay… It’s not really a pie, it’s a tart. And even worse, it’s French! I’m not going to go into the recipe because I got it off Saveur and I don’t take credit for work that’s not mine. So, if you’re interested, you can find the recipe here.

What I DO want to talk about is what it’s like to be an American appropriation. I was born in Miami Beach (my childhood was egregiously sweaty) but both of my parents are immigrants– The great American melting pot! Right? No, not really. Growing up was kind of tough (not nearly as tough as growing up in a third world country, but bear with me). There were just a lot of cultural or social norms that I didn’t “get”. I didn’t truly realize how clueless I was until college.

Warning: What I am about to write is the biggest issue in my current relationship (we’re getting personal here, people): I have never seen “Star Wars“.

There. I said it.

My shameful secret is exposed.

I’ve never seen any of the “Star Wars” movies. Not one. Not ever.

When I tell someone this, he/she usually has a hissy-fit. It’s pretty simple really, my parents didn’t come to this country until the late-80s, which means that, for the most part, they missed the wave of Star-Wars-Mania that struck the nation during the prior decade. So, when prequels were released in the 90s, there was no reason for us to see them; our parents didn’t really care and I was all like “Star Wars? Naw, dawg. I’m gonna go see ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’ and cry like a little bitch.”

I really never thought it was that big a deal. How huge could this set of movies really be? REALLY huge, evidently.

I equate “Star Wars” with apple pie. They’re both these ultra-American tropes that I just don’t get. I didn’t try apple pie until I was thirteen or fourteen, and it was one of those McDonald’s pies. Which was fine, but nothing special. Don’t get me wrong, I like apple pie, but is it really that big a deal? Yes. Yes, it is.
